I have always been a team sport kind of gal.
In high school I played field hockey. College was rowing.
After college, I started to run, and that was a fairly solitary sport for me (even though when I started running my teammate was a child in my jogging stroller).
I relegated myself to long, solitary runs. And, there was a time in my life that time ALONE, with MYSELF and myself only was as important to me as a strong cup of coffee in the morning.
And then, I think I broke myself training for so many marathons so many years in a row.
And for a while — a very long while — I didn’t run at all.
And then slowly I started running again.
And a I joined a team. With a proper coach. And training plans. And (oh my god) speed work (I had never done ANY of these things, all my running had been fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants style).
But now I know that running is my sport of choice.
And it is, indeed, a team sport.
Track Tuesday is a LOT better when you have a pace group.
Long runs feel less long when you have a buddy (or a whole team) to run with.
I’m not where I want to be fitness wise yet. But my love for this team sport is back. Hard.
And this year, I’ve got more races than ever on the schedule.
And instead of being scared, I am pumped.
Everyone needs a team.
